Dating from the early 19th century, this property was built as a "Manoir" or country style townhouse with gardens, stables and separate servants' quarters. Recently renovated to a very high standard, the house has the perfect blend of old charm and modern convenience; it offers plenty of room for one or two families, with the possibility of another family, or grandparents, to stay in the separate gite. The open plan living room has exposed stone walls and rustic tile flooring with a large open double-sided fire that faces the living room, and dining room/kitchen area. The rest of the house includes four big bedrooms, two bathrooms, a laundry room, and spacious entrance hall. The property is just a few minutes walk from the very centre of the mediaeval town of St Jean d'Angely (population approx. 12,000). The nearest boulangerie is only about 50metres down the road and there is a quiet provincial bar and restaurant directly opposite the house (see photo below).
The view from the upstairs bedrooms is of the medaeval town centre (at the top of the road, just past the crossroads). The tops of the famous Abbey towers can also be seen (the rest of the Abbey was pillaged and burnt by the British, though luckily not in living memory). |
